Module 4: The Five Principles
4. Trigger Control
There should be clearance between the trigger and pistol grip, so the trigger should be placed on the pad of the finger.
The pulling motion should come from the first joint of the finger.
The trigger release should be slow, straight and smooth so that there is no angled pressure when the shot is released.
The pressure used to hold the pistol grip should be tight enough that the excess muscle tension does not cause lateral movement of the rifle.
Finger on the pad of the trigger for feeling
Squeeze from the first joint to pull the trigger along the line of the barrel
The trigger release should take between 1.5 and 2 seconds.
The trigger must be pulled along the axis of the barrel to reduce any movement of the rifle.
Squeezing the trigger is done when there is a break in breathing, the sights are aligned, and there is little movement in the rifle.
Trigger squeeze should be done subconsciously as there is a short period of time before the lack of oxygen strains the muscles and eyes.
